Mangal dosha
Also called being manglik or kuja dosha
What it is
Mangal dosha is present when Mars sits in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house of the chart. These houses cover yourself, family, home, marriage, shared life and the bedroom, and tradition holds that fiery Mars there can bring friction into married life. Someone with it is called manglik.
How it is worked out
Count the houses from the lagna to Mars. Most astrologers also count from the Moon and from Venus, and some leave out the 2nd house. Our checker looks from all three, and from the lagna only when the birth time is known.
Why it is not cause for fear
It is very common: from the lagna alone, Mars falls in one of these six houses in about half of all charts. Tradition also lists many exceptions, such as Mars in its own sign (Mesh or Vrishchik) or exalted in Makar, and when both partners are manglik, tradition considers the dosha balanced. It is one factor among many in matching, and it is read with the whole chart.
What tradition suggests
Tradition suggests reading the Hanuman Chalisa or saying “Om Mangalaya Namah” on Tuesdays, and matching with a partner whose chart balances Mars. Any remedy should be chosen after both charts are read.
