How healthy is your home’s Vastu?

Twelve quick questions about your entrance, kitchen, bedroom and more, with a score, a map of your home’s zones and tips. It runs on your device: nothing is sent anywhere.

12 questions, about three minutes. Your answers stay on this device: nothing is sent or saved.

1. Which way does your main entrance face?

Stand in the doorway looking out. The direction you face is the way the entrance faces. A phone compass helps.

2. Where in your home is the kitchen?

Picture the home from above, stand at its centre, and ask which side the kitchen is on.

3. Which way do you face while cooking?

Stand at the stove as you would to cook.

4. Where is the main bedroom?

The room where the head of the family sleeps.

5. When you lie in bed, which way does your head point?

The direction of the wall behind your pillow.

6. Where is your puja or prayer space?

Your mandir, altar or the place you pray.

7. Where are most of the toilets?

If there are several, pick where most of them are.

8. What is at the centre of your home?

The brahmasthan: the middle of the floor plan.

9. How is the north-east corner of your home?

The corner between north and east.

10. Where is the staircase?

The stairs inside your home, if it has any.

11. Where is the underground tank, sump or borewell?

Water stored below ground level.

12. What shape is your home’s floor plan?

Look at the outline of the flat or house.

How the quiz works

Each answer is compared with the placement traditional Vastu recommends for that part of the home. Your score is the share of answers that follow tradition, with the “workable” ones counting half. Answers of “I’m not sure” or “not applicable” are left out, so they don’t lower your score.

The quiz can only see the big picture. A Vastu reading works from your floor plan: the exact position of each door, room and heavy object, and the people who live there. Much of what the quiz flags can be balanced without rebuilding. The Vastu guide explains the 16 zones and each room.

Finding the directions in your home

Stand near the centre of your home with a compass app on your phone, away from metal, the fridge and other appliances. Note where north is. Then imagine the floor plan divided into a 3 × 3 grid, with north at the top: the eight outer squares are the eight directions, and the middle one is the centre (brahmasthan).

For the main entrance, stand in the doorway looking out: the direction you face is the direction the entrance faces.
