Reading the panchang
The panchang has five limbs. Tithi is the lunar day, set by the angle between the Moon and the Sun. Nakshatra is the Moon’s lunar mansion. Yoga comes from the combined motion of the Sun and Moon, karana is half a tithi, and vaar is the weekday. Each limb shows when it changes.
Rahu kaal, Yamaganda and Gulika kaal are the parts of the day traditionally kept free of new beginnings. Abhijit muhurat, around local noon, is one of the most auspicious windows of the day.
Choghadiya splits the day and the night into eight parts each. Amrit, Shubh, Labh and Char are good for starting work, travel and purchases; Udveg, Rog and Kaal are best avoided.
