Muhurat

The seven natures

Tradition sorts the nakshatras into seven natures, used to choose a good day (muhurat) for each kind of work. On any day, the Moon’s nakshatra lends the day its nature.

  • Fixed (dhruva)

A fixed star, good for anything meant to last: foundations, planting and long-term plans.

Rohini, Uttara Phalguni, Uttara Ashadha and Uttara Bhadrapada

  • Moving (chara)

A moving star, good for travel, vehicles and making changes.

  • Fierce (ugra)

A fierce star, good for bold or competitive work but not for auspicious beginnings.

Bharani, Magha, Purva Phalguni, Purva Ashadha and Purva Bhadrapada

  • Mixed (mishra)

A mixed star, good for routine work and everyday tasks.

    Krittika and Vishakha

  • Swift (kshipra)

A swift star, good for quick tasks, trade, learning and short trips.

    Ashwini, Pushya and Hasta

  • Soft (mridu)

A soft star, good for friendship, romance, music and the arts, and for wearing something new.

    Mrigashira, Chitra, Anuradha and Revati

  • Sharp (tikshna)

A sharp star, good for ending things, research and hard decisions; avoid new beginnings.

    Ardra, Ashlesha, Jyeshtha and Mula
