What is the Lo Shu grid?

The Lo Shu is an ancient 3×3 magic square from China: each row, column and diagonal of the numbers 1 to 9 adds up to 15. Numerologists in India place the digits of your date of birth in it, often with your mulank and bhagyank, to see which numbers repeat and which are missing. Zeros are left out.

Reading the grid

Each number stands for a planet: 1 the Sun, 2 the Moon, 3 Jupiter, 4 Rahu, 5 Mercury, 6 Venus, 7 Ketu, 8 Saturn and 9 Mars. A repeated number is read as a quality that shows strongly, and a missing one as a quality that takes more effort. Three numbers in a line form a plane, such as the mental plane (4, 9, 2) along the top.

Traditional guidance, not a forecast

The grid is a way to reflect on your strengths and the areas you may want to work on, not a prediction. Each square is also linked with a direction, which is why the grid is often read alongside Vastu. A numerology consultation reads the grid together with your name and your other numbers.

Questions

About the Lo Shu grid

Are my mulank and bhagyank added to the grid?

Many Indian numerologists add them, so the calculator does unless you untick the box; the classic grid uses the digits of the date alone. Some also add a Kua number worked out from the year of birth and gender. The result says which numbers were used.

Is a missing number a bad sign?

No. A date of birth has at most eight digits and zeros are left out, so every grid has gaps. Traditionally a missing number points to a quality that takes more conscious effort, not to something you lack.

Can my grid change?

Your grid comes from your date of birth, so it stays the same all your life. Numerologists sometimes suggest a name spelling or a mobile number whose numbers fill the gaps; the numerology calculator shows your name number.
